Netcom was a shell provider - you'd dial into a *nix shell. Not sure what they used back then...
You'd have Elm and PINE for email, tin for news, and gopher clients. And FTP. A tilde web space if you were lucky (http://netcom.com/~username)
ICG becomes Level 3, someone aquired someone else and it all became something else at some point.
