• Help needed before Ubuntu upgrade

From Davey@2:250/1 to All on Wed Mar 18 08:44:55 2026
I am preparing to upgrade my Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04. I appreciate that a
Clean Install is better than an upgrade, and it is what I have always
    done.
My main concern is: Will my Swann CCTV software survive? I had to do a
lot of tweaks to the Wine installation, that I cannot remember, to make
it work on the 22.04, and I do not want to lose that under any
    circumstances.

So the question is: How can I make sure that that survives? I was
wondering whether to install 24.04 alongside the 22.04, and see what
happens, i.e. can I copy the Swann stuff over to the 24.04 somehow?

I used to create a separate 'Home' folder, but have not done that for
some time. Would this be a good plan?

    Help welcome!

I am preparing to upgrade my Desktop PC from Ubuntu 22.04LTS to
24.04LTS. I appreciate that a Clean Install is better than an Upgrade,
and it is what I have always done.
My main concern is: Will my Swann CCTV software survive? I had to do a
lot of tweaks to the Wine installation, that I cannot remember, (a
lot of them were: Try this, no good, try that instead, in an unfamiliar
world) to make it work on the 22.04, and I do not want to lose that
under any circumstances. I often have it running in the background
while using the PC, so I can watch the world go by (and couriers not
pressing the doorbell or using the doorknocker). I would like to know
how to back up the tweaks, if possible, but they must spread over
several different system folders and files.
So the question is: How can I make sure that that survives? I was
wondering whether to install 24.04 alongside the 22.04, and see what
happens, i.e. can I copy the Swann stuff over to the 24.04 somehow?
I realise that an upgrade to 26.04 may be in the future, but let's take
it one LTS step at a time.
I used to create a Home directory, but haven't done that for a while.
    Would that help here?

I have tried researching this, but I am overwhelmed by the opinions out
there, none of those that I can find cover this exact question.
    Help and wisdom welcome!

I thought those things were dodgy enough on Windows itself (needing
ActiveX in ancient version of IE) let alone on Wine in Linux ... good luck.

So I have accidentally achieved the very difficult? It seems to run ok
    once I got it sorted.
    Ooh err...
Maybe I'll be sticking with 22.04!

A clean install is not better than an upgrade, since it destroys
    everything outside /home.

It depends where the tweaks are. I know nothing of Wine but broadly
speaking if the tweaks are in /etc then a clean reinstall will destroy
them, if they are somewhere in your home directory then they will
survive, as long as you take care not to erase your home directory
during the install (for instance by repartitioning).

Whatever you do, make sure your backups are up to date first.

Indeed. But it is usually reported that a new Install prevents problems
held over from the old install.

That is what I am worried about. See next thread for reason to upgrade!

    I am trying.
