• How to check if VLC has started running?

From Jim Lesurf@2:250/1 to All on Thursday, August 15, 2024 11:08:03
I'm using ROX Filer on top of xfce Mint.

All works nicely except that on one machine I keep getting a problem which
I then have to RIESUB my way out of!

This is that when I click on the ROX Filer 'icon bar' to launch VLC the
screen stiffs with the VLC windows partly shown. In effect the screen
    display gets frozen.

No other progs which I start in the same way do this.

I *suspect* that what happens is that I get an occasional 'bounced' click
from the (wireless) mouse -> connection. So the machine is trying to start *two* copies of VLC - with the second being called to start before the
first has finished showing up on the screen.

I can move the mouse pointer. But clicking on anything like a close-window
icon gets ignored. i.e. mouse and keyboard do nothing visible. Only way out I've found this far is RIESUB and start again.

Doesn't happen often but is a PITA when it does, so...

I'd like to modify the call to start by having it first check if vlc is
started or already up and running, and if so, abort trying to start copy.
I'm guessing there is a way to get the system to tell me this, but if so,
no idea what or how to add it to the commands being launched.

    Info?

    Thanks,

PS Use VLC on a number of machine with the same ROX Filer setup. Don't get
this problem with any of them. Main distinction is that the 'problem'
system uses wireless mouse and keyboard whereas all the others use USB
cable. That't not very practical when the sofa is across the room from the
    comp and screen, though. :-)

Can't comment much on your specific problem but ...

mouse. When I did the problem went away.

If it is the mouse beginning to fail, fairly soon it'll be happening
    more and more often.

I presume you've thought to look for a PID file?

Apparently logitech are considering mice with a monthly rental!

I've tried three different mice. Inc two brand new ones (logitech M705's)
They all do it on occasion.

    Say more. :-)
