Why does Gparted leave free space preceeding the partition on a USB
    Flash memory

It's treated the same as a hard disk.

The first sector of the first MB contains the partition table.

As partitions are aligned on a 1 MB boundary for write performance reasons, the rest of that
first MB is not used, leaving the rest of the memory card for the actual partitions.

    See https://flashdba.com/2014/06/20/understanding-flash-blocks-pages-and-program-erases/
for an explanation of the write performance reasons for aligning the partitions.

Oh God!! David, I'm getting old

I should have remembered that from the DOS days when my first
GIGANTIC HD was a Seagate 112 meg.
I am having flashbacks to all the partitioning nightmares of the past

    Regards

Congratulations Faeychild! Soon you will be old enough to
encounter unexpected aches and pains, loosening of certain sphincters, unexpected muscle cramps and other signal symptoms of long survival.

vitamins D, K and magnesium help measurably.

D and K for the bone strength again

"symptoms of long survival" can I appropriate that, Bobby?

You can use that. But I have been using plenty of
vitamins, minerals including Magnesium Malate and Calcium
Carbonate. I am senstive to citric Acid so do not use
citrates. I tried a citrate mineral some years back and had
immediate weakening. But while most doctors ignore vitamins
my PCP just retired, prescibed 4000 iu of Vitamin D-3.
That is because of weakness I live a mostly indoor livestyle
and because of a peach with freckles completion wear high
    factor sunblock outside.
I started with bonemeal when i was in my 20s living
a fairly active lifestyle, drinking lots of milk but having
a high pulse. Resting pulse currently at about 54-60. Later
learned I was allergic to animal casein protein.

I take 1000 Mg. of Nicinamide daily, but niacin can
be used and 1000 mg. of vitamin C TID that is 3 times a day.
Both help my tired old bipolar head.

    Good luck,
    Faeychild.

I get occasional references to bone broth in the YouTube feed and I know
I should cultivate a good butcher for marrow bones.

Do you get the niacin flush?
I though I as having some sort of allergic reaction

Well if i was cooking for more people than myself I would
buy bone broth in cartons at one of several grocery stores I have used.

Yes I do get Niacin Flush and it ain't fun but not
as bad as a bad allergic reaction.
