• Editing Video files ..... Which program??

From Daniel70@2:250/1 to All on Monday, August 26, 2024 12:28:23
I'm looking to burn to DVD some TV programs that I've recorded from Free-to-Air T.V. for my own usage.

Because the T.V. stations tend to start and finish broadcasting the
programs at the advertised time, I'd like to "top-n-tail" the recordings before burning to DVD.

Which programs would you advise me to use?? TIA ;-P

I used to use mthtv after the ads are removed then burn but I used this
rarely as I normally watch from the saved files.

Here mythtv is set to remove the ads or auto skip them.

(and I've just noticed I missed a VITAL word in my origina; post ...
    *NOT* .... now added, above)

I've recorded the programs from Free-to-Air T.V. and they now sit in my
PVR's HD. I've never tried any of this new-fangled Instant programming
    stuff.

I guess, one day, I might have to give it a go .... but, then, what do I
do with all my (purchased) DVD's.

I record several TV programs for a neighbor.
I pass the 'TS" stream through Handbrake to remove overhead and then use Kdenlive to chop out the ads then copy to SD cards and plug them into
a USB reader for the TV

" 'TS' stream"?? 'Handbrake'?? Never heard of it.

So, not having to worry about cutting the ads, it seems Kdenlive might
be able to "top-n-tail" my programs for me.

    Thanks.

"TS" stream is what comes out of the tuner card. Its a container for the
mp4 video file. It contains a lot of extraneous channel info and data to buffer a free to air transmission.

O.K., so as I've currently got the T.V. programs on my PVR's HD, when I
copy them to a USB Drive, will I have to deal with this "TS" stuff or
should I just be getting the mp4 video file??

If the files are labeled foo.ts then yes, but if they are foo.mp4 then
just top and tail as you said.
Nice that you don't have to deal with ads. I WISH , I always miss at
    least one

Handbrake, available in Mageia's tainted repositories, can't
"top-n-tail" your programs, but it can convert the relatively large file
of a live recording into something smaller, using better codecs and compression methods. It can also be set to shrink file size even more
with only a slight difference in quality, depending on how fussy you are
about it. Something to play with if storage room is limited.
