Hi all,

though AI has only few to do with Mageia OS, this one has to be stored on
some HD as well. So, indirectly, this touches all of us.

What happened?

I was about to order a handful new SSHD disks, because the disks I had,
were placed into machines meanwhile. So, I started to place a purchase
order, 2 pcs Samsung EVO 870 1TB.

I ordered one piece 3 years ago from Reichelt Elektronik, Germany:
MZ-77E1T0B Samsung SSD 870 EVO Series 1TB: Euro 61.50 (including tax).

Now I see EXACTLY the same HD: Euro 309.00 (!)

Tech magazines claim that this is because Google, OpenAI & Co are buying
every storage device they can get for their AI datacenters.

Well, be it so, but how can a product, for which no further development is needed any more, rise to 5 times the price within 3 years?
Are they kidding us?

What would you do? You have a SSD for sale. One person offers your 300
Euro for it. Another offers you 60 Euro? You have the ssd so there is no
cost to you whichever one you choose. You will make a profit in both
cases. Which customer would you sell it to.?

(That it is the raw chips makes no difference.).

Hi,

that's what I had been told many times recently, yes!

It is like this:
Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and all the others demand for huge SSHDs like 8 TByte and above. And, they are not only able, but they are also willing to
pay any price.
So, Samsung, Western et al. conclude: "Hey, we're not stupid. If this is
the way to make big money, so, let's focus on producing huge HDs and stop wasting time with producing for end-customers".
....And normal people (as we are) can empty the stocks, or look on ebay...

That's not fair, but this is the basic rule of business.
