I'm not sure if I'm going deaf.
I find that the audio on youtube is distorted, developing a mid range
    blasting or booming effect.
Similar to the mobile phone sound when the user fails to talk directly
    into the mic.
    Natural sounds are still OK
I was going to test a few equalizers but locating a trustworthy one is uncertain

    regards

Hmm!! When I last had my hearing tested (about this time last year), my hearing in both ears dipped at about 1kHz. (3dB in left, 5dB in right)
The Hearing Technician plugged in a Hearing Aide and programmed it to counter-act the right ear loss. I wore it the rest of that day .... but haven't bothered since. ;-P

Is this because YouTube has blown my hearing away?? ;-P

YouTube is always under suspicion, and rightly so

You tube videos are starting to sound like the narrator is speaking into
his hand although the sibilants remain. The same audio effect as a lot
of phone calls on talk-back radio

Some heavy testing is in order I think

Google regularly makes changes to Youtube in an attempt to thwart
downloaders, but this doesn't sound like that.

How long have you noticed it? I haven't watched a Youtube video in about
a week or 10 days, and I didn't notice anything. Is it just with new
videos, or do you notice it with older ones that sounded OK before?

It's a recent effect. That is why I wondered about my hearing
I don't particularly remember any old youtube for comparison
The sound is inconsistent, noticeable on dialog
It shows up a a muffly boomy sort of mid range distortion

The best description would be someone talking with a hand over the
mouth. Or a not close miked mobile phone. Some sound sources have it,
    some don't.
I'm beginning to suspect it's THEM, not me

I watched several recent Youtube videos on my desktop computer last
evening, and while I noticed variation in how loud they were, I didn't
    hear anything I'd call distortion.

I do hear something from time to time on my laptop, but I just put that
off to the tiny speakers it has. The speakers on my desktop are quite
old, but of relatively good quality. (Got 'em on a garage sale a good 20
    years ago...)

A quick pick through YouTube listing

This one from ScimanDan is mid-range muffled and dull

    https://tinyurl.com/yetp8d5p

This one from an MD is crisp sharp and clear

    https://tinyurl.com/567fmfvc

There are many examples of varying degree on Youtube

the inconsistency has at least cleared my equipment and hearing

Not really a good test because I listened on my laptop, but I just
listened to both. I found the second slightly louder than the first, but
both were equally "clear." There was distortion on each that is easily explained by the laptop's tiny speakers.

I've noticed that volume varies a great deal from video to video, but I believe that's most likely due to settings of the recording equipment.

I have a dilemma. Can't be my hearing, that would be consistent across
all sources. And motherboard, speakers, amp.

    Damn

    They are both clear here.

The first one I played at the same volume I normally use for watching videos. The second one I had to turn the volume down in kmix from 30 to 20, but otherwise both
    are fine.

Firefox using pulseaudio under kde plasma for playback.
Mageia 9 x86_64 with tainted and 32 bit repos enabled.
Laptop connected to the montitor via hdmi, with external speakers amplifier plugged into
    the monitor.

It goes without saying that youtube audio levels are all over the place

OK thanks. I have an inconsistent problem here then

I have gigabyte B250M-D3H getting a bit old now
    Logitech speakers
I have an old tower somewhere I could substitute for an overall test
but these days enthusiasm wanes. I want easy solutions :-|
