• Golded and Synchronet 3.20

From Richard Vonzel@1:154/110 to All on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 11:05:48
Has ayone gotten Golded to read the new Synchronet 3.20? Or is anyone working on some new code so Golded will work the SBBS?

    Thanks,
    RickV

Golded has worked with Synchronet for quite some time although it needs configuration.

I don't think anything has changed in the SBBS message structure that would break it.

When SBBS upgraded to 3.20 it went from a msgs.cnf file to a msgs.ini text file that Golded can't read. The message structure is the same but the configuation is now different. It would be great if there was a utility program that could read the msgs.ini file and create a msgs.cnf file.

Unfortunately, you really couldn't be done reliably. One of the reasons for going from .cnf to .ini format was to be able to expand configuration fields and now that we've done that (e.g. 32-char internal codes), those won't "fit" in a msgs.cnf file. If a sysop upgraded from an earlier version of Synchronet, they should still have their msgs.cnf file in place that GoldEd+ could read/use until such time as someone updates the program to read msgs.ini files.

So, how about an areas.bbs that GoldEd can read? Mystic creates one that Golded can read as areafile? Maybe on option to create one areas.bbs for all the message areas, and the ability to run it as an event to account for new areas?

In that case you may need to configure golded by hand area by area in the golded.cfg.

It's no convenient, but it's doable.

Sure, go for it. I thought GoldEd+ used more than just the sub-board "internal code" from the msgs.cnf, but if it doesn't then perhaps an area file is all it would need.

Fun fact: I was the one who asked Alexander all those years ago to put SBBS support in GoldEd when I was tinkering with Synchronet/2. He did a great job putting basic support in.

You don't need to be a programmer to read what it says, but the "Tell me how" is definitely showing you'd rather someone else do the work for you, so here:

    "cfgs/config/advanced.cfg"

    "AREAFILE SBBS /path/to/sbbs/ctrl/msgs.ini"

Use the above line in your Golded config file and it should work, unless you're using an older version of Golded that doesn't support it.

Golded's Github doesn't have a Windows build past 2018, as it is probably expected and assumed one would compile it themselves from there, but with about 2 minutes of searching the interwebs, here is a link to the most recent compiled Windows binaries, courtesy of Max Vasilyev:

You need to use a version of GoldEd+ that was built from the source code after March 6, 2024. It looks like the last official release of GoldEd+ was in 2020, so you'll need to get ahold of a pre-release build for your OS (Windows?).

Yeah, seems you need to be logged in to download them. It's not a big deal, as I build myself and don't need it. I just wondered why there was no downloads available when I followed the link, but didn't log in.

Was the original work this done 9 months ago?

That was not my change. I've just merged it to the master. Unfortunately I don't have much time to work on GoldEd. I'll let you know when some important changes will be done. I still want to add full iconv support for messages recoding. But code is poorly structured. A lot of duplication. It will take some time.
