What if you disable the message bases
entirely, leaving just files and doors?
Does that still make the BBS "social
media"?
social media not. but social network yes. As still through gaming you can socialize with others very well.
If you narrowed that only to files though. That would be only content distribution with least social aspect of it, unless some form of discussion emerges from it. Then we come back to point number one.
I really like to highlight to many that social media and social networks are two different things, just evolved from each other.
Do you remember when all the social media sites were called social networking sites? It was then when they worked more towards connecting communities this way or another.
Then the business model turned them to media, which is about content consumption and social part of it is only related to the possibility to interact with the content (primarily ads. That makes social MEDIA more some fucked up mutation of TV, RADIO and Newspapers than any place I'd call a community development spot.
That's where BBSes even IRC... even Discord... or Mastodon are more about social NETWORKS than Media.
There are better or worse options for social NETWORKING.. but all social MEDIA are just exploiting us today with little value.
If I want TV I have paid streaming.. if I want radio... I actually still use radio. If I want music I actually digitalize music and create my own digital platform to consume (Spotify is another SOCIAL MEDIA place that I disregard personally). If I want news and articles then I actually came back to paper but digitalized as PDF distribution and read on tablets. Online portals are also more SOCIAL MEDIA with the bad connotation than added value these days (see click bait argument raised somewhere near already).
I find fighting with Web 2.0/Social Media legitimate even if Web as we know it died. But I love the idea that internet is a place that can help us all socially network at global scale.
I think federated/distributed and community owned nodes that represent the platform is better than centralized and I think that's why many of us are here.. many of us test Matrix or Mastodon... for the same reason..
I think many of us are fed up with centralized, corporate and ad infested platform to share ideas and discuss them together. even just consuming..

... Xerox Alto was the thing. Anything after we use is just a mere copy.
