Can the sysop of this system please take control of your FTP sessions for the "BABZWRLD" QWKnet account on Vertrauen?

This system is creating literally hundreds of concurrent FTP connections to dove.synchro.net, so something is haywire with your QWKnet call-out methods/scripts.

I seem to reall Marisa had created some system script to peform QWKnet-FTP connections (why not just use the built-in methods in SBBS?), but I thought she'd fixed that.

It's been fun putting in measures to counter act this "attack", but I think I'm done with that fun now. Your system is out of control. Please fix,

Probably one of those auto-pilot "sysops", who doesn't even know it's happening, and doesn't care.

I'd put an IP block on the a-hole.

I did, and sysop@babzwrld. But I also wanted to post a PSA and have the discussion here about this synchronetbbs.org hosted systems and their whacky QWKnet FTP behavior and solution.

I told marissa that he should stop doing that free server stuff.
They're just people who don't care and abandon the system.

marissa sets that stuff up so it's probably not the sysop's fault.

There were some synchronetbbs.org systems (including AmigaCity) doing this same thing months ago and Marisa said she fixed it. I'm not clear what thing she's doing different in the first place (using cron to schedule QWKnet call-outs or similar?) or why that was deemed necessary. I'd like to have that discussion.

they said they don't do anything different and there were a lot of processes running. I wouldn't trust that without screenshots.

Yeah, Marisa said there a lot of instances of sbbs running. I'll work on a way to auto-prevent that from happening by accident. It's not an uncommon sysop mistake to have 2 instances (and usually results in port bind failures), but hundreds of instances of sbbs is really messed-up.

probably operator error. like a bad script.

yep marisa has 'synchronetutilities' for download with a perl scripts "startsynchronetbbs" and 'synchronetbbs' that are designed to launch synchronet for linux and have their own checks to see if it's running.
